Chapter 15

Nick couldn’t believe Christmas Day had finally arrived. He stopped in front of the B and B and rang the now-familiar bell.

Carol opened the door, a package spilling out of her arms.

Judging from the gaily wrapped boxes, Carol had been in her element shopping for Phyllis and her girls. “Did you leave anything for the other customers?”

“A few things. Did you get the bikes?”

“Yep. They’re already loaded.” He started picking up boxes to carry out. “Who is that other sack of presents for?”

She winked. “One might be for you, and the rest are for my sisters.”

“I thought you only had three sisters.”

“I do, but they have to receive two each—one for Christmas and one for our birthday.”

Thanks to Mrs. B, he had two gifts for Carol. “Speaking of birthdays, happy birthday to the sweetest girl of all. And I do have two gifts for you, too, but they’re wrapped together. Do you want them now or after we deliver these presents?”

“Later. I can’t wait to see the kids’ expressions when they see their bikes and all the other gifts.”

“Me either.” And I can’t wait to watch you open yours.

After a couple trips, the truck was loaded, and they drove the familiar blocks.

Each gathered up an armful of boxes then approached the house. As they set down the presents, they noticed a plate of decorated Christmas cookies with a note.

Carol read the note and began to cry. Nick slid it out of her hands, hoping and praying nothing was wrong. It read:

Dear Jesus’ helpers, we so much appreciate all your gifts, so we wanted to share some of our Christmas cookies with you—cookies made with the flour, butter, sugar, and eggs you provided. We also wanted to share our mom’s favorite Bible verse about the greatest gift of all. “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15).

Love, Phyllis, Yvonne, and Connie
