I’m sorry you haven’t heard from me for a while, but I hope Max managed to let you know the reason why. As you can see from the address at the top of this letter, I’m now in hospital. Not Stratton House, unfortunately, but near Manchester, which is many miles away from you.

Well, I’ve never believed in hiding from the truth, so I’ll be blunt and say I’m not a pretty sight. Not that I was Prince Charming before, but now … definitely not. A broken left arm is the least of it. That will mend soon enough. But I’m also burned on my left-hand side – face, ear, neck and hand. They’re doing their best to heal me and minimize my scars, but I’ll never be quite the same again.
