Colt

Colt enters the precinct, a two-story building on Eleventh Street, not far from the Mercy City shopping district. A squat, concrete building, its only aesthetic is that is overlooks a large lake. A proportion of lucky detectives would have an office with a view.

He pauses inside, noting the business of the foyer. Beyond the front desk is a glass wall, revealing cubicles created by low dividers, messy desks at each one. Uniformed and plain clothed officers mill around, a few carrying cups of black coffee. To his left sit a couple on hard plastic chairs that are bolted to the ground, looking pale. Possibly witnesses to the latest attack by the cult.

Colt walks up the front desk, tension making his muscles feel like taut rubber bands. When he framed Leopold for the murders the Grigori had committed, he hadn’t known the cult members would resort to violence, let alone use of hellfires to torment the city. And now they had attacked the parking lot beside City Hall. Their violence wasn’t stopping.

The officer behind the desk eyes Colt up and down as he approaches, probably trying to figure out on which side of the law he spends most of his time. “Can I help you?”

“I’d like to speak to Detective Riley Espinosa, please.”

“Sorry, she’s busy,” says the officer, seeming to decide that Colt isn’t the most savory of characters. Colt admires him for his astuteness.

He shrugs. “I’ll wait, then.”

Without waiting for an answer, he takes the seat furthest away from the couple. Now isn’t the time to use his demon magic to get what he wants. Too many people are watching his every move. He sighs as he wipes his hand down his face. Or maybe he just wants to prove to Gabby that her trust isn’t misplaced.

Even though it is.

Turns out, he doesn’t have to wait long, which is a relief. Dwelling on problems that have no immediate solutions is unpleasant. Riley steps through the glass doors, her eyebrows raised. “Colt, what are you doing here?”

He stands. “I’d like to have a word, if that’s okay.”

She studies him, then nods. “Sure. I’ll see if there’s a room empty.”

Colt follows as she steps back through the glass doors. Riley weaves her way through the desks piled with files and empty coffee cups. “Sorry,” she says over her shoulder. “We’ll probably have to use one of the interrogation rooms.”

Colt notes the handful of doors to their right and he wonders which one the cult member is in. It’s him he really wants to talk to.

“The Eleventh Precinct hasn’t got a lot of love with all the budget cuts in the past few years,” explains Riley as she continues toward the first door. She pushes it open and waits for Colt to pass through. “Although that’s about to change.”

Colt takes in the small, square room. A table sits in the middle with two metal-framed chairs, but apart from that, it’s bare. The cramped cement room is downright suffocating. “Moving on from the bomb shelter decor?”

Riley snorts.
