DEVELOPMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

Cognitive and Intellectual Development

Brice, an academically gifted student with a keen interest in science and math (and the grades to match), informed me during one of our earlier sessions of his interest in pursuing medical school in the future. Although I did not see Brice’s academic records, he reported earning nearly straight As in all of his subjects, with his best grades (and greatest fascination) in the subjects of science and math. Brice reported being in advanced placement courses throughout high school and received near perfect SAT and ACT test scores. Brice reported socializing with other students in his advanced placement courses, and did not see himself different academically from other high-achieving students in these courses. He also reported excitement about his upcoming college career; at the time I met Brice, he applied for an advanced placement undergraduate-to-graduate medical school track at the local university where I worked as a faculty member. Based on my conversations with Brice, I placed him in the formal operations stage of Piaget’s theory of cognitive development (Piaget, 1983).
