The day Indigo walked out of my life, I feared she wouldn’t return to New York until her play in March, and I would never see her again. She could easily make the decision to remain in Atlanta. She had her aunt, whom she loved like a mother, and she had friends. Indigo could easily start over there. All she had here was a dead-end job and failed dreams. She loved my mother, but loving my mother wouldn’t be enough for her to return to New York, especially if she wanted to avoid me.

My head pounded, and my heart ached when she rushed out of my door that night. She’d been abused by some man. Her violent reaction to my touch and her reticence to truly engage with me was clear. She couldn’t, or she wouldn’t risk giving her heart to another man. A man like me. A controlling man. A man who wanted his woman to submit. And how could Indigo give me that when she couldn’t trust that I wouldn’t harm her emotionally or physically?

On Thanksgiving, I texted her, wishing she and her family had a wonderful day and that I missed her. She only sent a thumbs-up. That response hurt worse than if she left me on read. I moped around in my house until my doorbell rang.

Still in sweats, I opened the door to Zuri, wearing an orange dress and brown boots. Her brown locs that complimented her mocha skin hung low down her back.

She glanced at my bare chest and teased, “Put a shirt on. No need to flex. I’m not bringing any of my friends to dinner.”

“I don’t feel like going upstairs. If you don’t like it, I’ll see you later.”

“Go ahead and get changed. I’m not going anywhere without you. I can tell you plan to be here all day, all sad and lonely. It’s Thanksgiving, and Mommy will be upset if you don’t come.”

“Really? She seems irritated when I’m around.”

“Because you’re too fucking bossy. You make her nervous. Sometimes, your tone sets my teeth on edge, and I know you mean no harm.” She put her hands on her hips. “What’s wrong with you? You were just all giddy the other day when we had dinner.”

“I wouldn’t call it giddy,” I grunted.

Zuri pointed to my mouth. “This couldn’t stop smiling. And every other word was about Indigo.”

I headed to my kitchen. “Don’t want to talk about it.”

She followed behind me. “Chi, what did you do to Indigo?”

“I did nothing.”

“I told you to leave her alone. Now, she’s all in love with you, and you could care less.”

I swirled around so fast that she almost bumped into me. “Wrong. Indigo doesn’t want to be with me. She left me.”

Zuri frowned. “Does she know you want a relationship?”

“In so many words.”

She shook her head. “Not in so many words, did you ask her?”

“We got into it because she didn’t want to tell me about some dude she was seeing before me. She reminded me we’re not in a relationship, so she didn’t have to tell me shit.
