I stood under the full moon, my breath coming out in white plumes, briefly obscuring the simmering orb, before dissipating. There was something about it that drew me out on clear nights. Perhaps it was the way it waned and eventually died, bright and temporary like the shooting stars that framed it. I envied them. The cold air quenched the burning thirst in my throat, and I reached out as if I could feel the beams of moonlight brush against my fingertips. Something was amiss, something I couldn't wrap my head around yet. I'd completely forgotten that Delton was presenting tributes tonight, but his footsteps behind brought the memory back to the surface.

"Sire, they're here."

A pang of sadness hit my stomach. I didn’t want to tear myself away from the moon's light and the peace that came with it, in exchange for a parade of women who would no doubt remind me of Nova.

"Sire?" Ronan said, his voice a little softer this time.

"Something is off," I said, turning to him. "Can you feel it?"

He pressed his lips together, and I could feel annoyance radiating from him, fueling me with a twinge of pleasure. It was enough to send me trudging through the cold, back to my stained glass prison. With every step toward the palace, my unease grew, until it felt like a weight resting on my chest. I could hear Ronan's footsteps behind me, so I squelched any visible signs of distress.

If this was something new, something that could shake me from the mundanity of eternal life, however abhorrent, it would be a welcomed change. When I stepped into the Blood Court, the sanguine aroma struck me so hard it could have knocked me off my feet. Instead, I went straight for the Throne room, where I knew the tributes would be waiting.

I pushed open the door as the weight on my chest threatened to crack my ribs. I pushed on to see Delton, sitting on the arm of my throne. Rage swelled, and I saw a glimmer of amusement in his swampy eyes.

I straightened and forced a smile. "If it isn't the King of the Fairies."

His jaw clenched as he stood. "It's Fae," he muttered.

"What do you have for me tonight?"

"A gesture of my respect and admiration of the Blood Court."

They were the same words as always, but tonight they had a bite to them that I couldn't place.

"Let's see them then," I said, walking down the small flight to the carpeted floor where the tributes waited to be appraised.

I strode past the first row, hardly glancing at the trembling tributes as I moved to the next row. When I stepped into the second row, the weight on my chest amplified. Was this a tether? My gaze moved to Delton whose mossy green eyes were locked on my every move. His eyebrow twitched, and a wave of shame slammed into me. Did he really think I'd be so easily killed? That I'd sacrifice my immortality for a sensation
