Chapter Eleven

Aderus coursed quickly through the passageways of their vessel; blood roaring, senses sharp. Persistent thrums from his havat while on the human ship had alerted him but he wouldn’t believe until he saw it for himself. Hope was still a fragile thing.

The others were scarce, those he did spot heading in the same direction. None that he recognized from before, else he would have been tempted to lash out. But the knowledge they would soon have what they’d been waiting for redirected his focus and he didn’t stop until he reached the hold.

Aderus spotted Jadar, Krim and the rest. Then locked onto the tall pillars that lined the walls directly ahead. They resonated rhythmically, as if aware of what was coming; lighting the whole space with a persistent glow.

“Where is she?” The khurzhev soon asked from beside him, and Aderus bristled.

“On the Earth ship. They keep her for observation.”

The green-eyed healer rumbled softly. “...You should know many feel threatened.”

Aderus met his stare, knowing he was talking about how she wielded the havat. He understood their fears, had been on the receiving end more than any of them and cursed the potential it unlocked. But if what the diplomat said was true the scales were about to tip heavily in their favor. Aderus planned to keep close watch on her, and they would not bestow the technology on any other human until they were sure of the consequences.

“That will change, once they bring what we need,” he said. Attention fixing on the others as the energy of expectation made some snappish.

“If still they do not like it, then perhaps they should not provoke her,” he added darkly. Remembering the way a few had attacked and grabbed at her, despite his attempts to keep them at bay.

Were Tori Askari they would be rowing for her notice. Instead they harbored hostility and distrust. Aderus understood those feelings as much as any of them, but hearing it from another made him yearn for the satisfaction of watching her knock them to the ground again. A female he only just now accepted, slightly intimidated him. There could be no greater allure. She didn’t even know the strength she possessed and had injured him without intent. Then willingly fed him, bred him and healed his injuries.

Arousal prickled his spines as he imagined what she’d be capable of if she were ever to try.

“Prudence is wiser,” the healer responded and Aderus stilled. Aware of the male’s sniffing as his ears pulled at how much it sounded like something their new allies would say. “Your scent—"

“I hunted,” he told him.

“You hunted the Earthscape?” Jadar’s verdant eyes brightened, and Aderus snikted.

It was surprising how quickly the strangeness of the terrain had faded, he thought. The stems of large Earth plants reminding him of sheer cliff faces—albeit fleshier—with their fine cracks and crevices. Though it was awkward learning to climb and traverse them at first, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt as alive.

Those that ventured onto the human ship to experience it didn’t stay long, just like none had chosen to integrate.
