Luke had grudgingly given in to some of Bliss’s requests. It sat like a large river rock in his gut. Used to traveling light and on his own, Luke wasn’t sure how this road trip with Bliss would work out.

Yeah, he was a modern guy and believed in equality, but man, it was going to be hard to sit in the passenger seat. Maybe it would be good for him. Prepare him for the real world.

Naw. It was just going to make him cranky.

Twenty minutes later, Luke pulled into the driveway. He was thankful to see he’d beat Katie and the traveling nurse so he could update Grandpa first.

Grandpa napped in the old brown recliner on the sun porch, but woke when Luke tried to open the screen.

“It seems the quieter I try to be, the more likely it is to wake you. Sorry about that.” Luke sat in the matching recliner near where grandpa rested.

“No worry. Not really asleep.” Grandpa struggled to return the recliner to an upright position. “Meant to have lunch ready.”

“It’s okay, Grandpa. I’m early.” Luke leaned forward. “Bliss and I have a couple of leads and want to follow up on them while the trail is still warm. Means we’ll need to leave town overnight.”

His grandfather nodded. “Good. I’ll be fine.”

Luke sighed. “I know, Grandpa, but I won’t be able to focus on the case if I’m worried about what’s going on here. We’ll need to be gone overnight to Denver.”

He frowned as though he knew what was coming next.

“So, I called Katie and asked her to recommend someone for us. Just for tonight.”

“Now, Luke…”

“I know it’s the last thing you want, but I know you also want this case resolved for the Millers.” Luke decided it was time to pull out his ace. “Katie mentioned this lady, the traveling nurse, is putting herself through school updating her certifications and extra duties like this really help.”

Luke waited to be struck by lightning. It was the truth, but beefed up for dramatic effect.

Milt shook his head. He was all about education and helping folks. Luke knew he had him.

“Okay. But not too bossy.” Grandpa gave a snort. “Don’t like bossy.”

“Me, neither, Grandpa. Me neither.” Luke stood. “Thank you. I know it’s the last thing you want, but it will help me focus. Now, let me rustle up some lunch before they get here.”

“No meat.” His grandfather gestured toward the kitchen. “Jelly.”

Luke knew it was blackmail when the doctor wanted more proteins and less sugars in his grandfather’s diet for building muscle. But, heck, if a man wanted something as simple as a jelly sandwich now and again, he should be able to have it.

“Gotcha. Hey, remind me to pack a couple for myself for the drive.”

Grandpa gave a thumbs-up. “Should help, but will be lazy.”

Thirty minutes later, they’d had their lunch and a meeting with Katie and the nurse, Rose.

“So, Mr. McPherson, it looks like you won’t really be needing me, but your grandson is the nervous type.
