Taric

Taric wasn’t blind. He knew his other brothers liked Ez, but men didn’t share women in his culture. Women shared men. He was the closest to Ez’s age, so he thought that might give him an advantage – that and their connection to magic. His trip with Ez into town tomorrow would be the perfect time to press his claim.

Draven might be attracted to Ez, but he would never stoop to wooing her. He wasn’t built that way. So, with Talon and Darius otherwise occupied, he could court her properly. His heart beat faster just thinking about it. He knew she had plans and wanted to go back to Oasis, but those things could be done by other people. He would take good care of her here, and she would never want for anything. He might even forgo other wives if she requested it of him. Her shyness and boldness was an intoxicating combination - one he wanted to explore further.

Taric was momentarily sorry that she had woken alone. She might have been confused upon waking, wondering what to do and where she was welcome. He couldn’t imagine such a feeling, and his heart mourned for her. If she were his, he would make sure she knew she was welcome all the time.

A young boy ran into their camp soon after Ez left the tent to rest. He carried the message that Braum was ready to receive them. Jax sighed deeply. Taric knew his father had no love for the politics of clan business, but he was the best prospect to lead them. Braum was going to ruin 200 years of tradition if he continued on his current destructive path. The Wayfarer’s population had dwindled considerably between this camp and the one in the south. They needed to prosper or they would find their customs erased by the passage of time.

“Come along, sons,” Jax informed Taric and Darius. “Do not mention Ezriel. If he asks about her, I will speak of her in vague terms. If he is not aware of her magic and he cannot use her as a pawn, she will mean nothing to him. That will change if he finds she can benefit him in some way. I know he has no great love for his offspring, so I doubt he will claim another mouth to feed if she doesn’t supply him with some advantage.” Taric echoed his older brother’s nod, even though the idea of anyone using Ez upset him. There was no way he would willingly hand Ez over to Braum. The Chieftain’s relations with his family were appalling.

“Yes, Father.”

The men made their way through the camp, but Taric noted the difference in Jax’s enthusiasm from earlier in the day. Visiting the other masters had not been as great a chore as addressing the Chieftain. The Blue tents were the brightest and most numerous. It could be said of Braum and his sons that they were fertile if nothing else. Braum had eight children, six of them male.
