I didn’t understand myself. I’d made a pact to keep things as they were with Maria. That way, no one would get hurt. Now, I was in my car, being driven to pick her up, take her to the private airstrip to take a private jet to Paris for the weekend. The kind of thing I did when I was dating.

The idea had come to me when we were having sex. An urge to treat her to a fun weekend had taken root in my brain and would not leave. Still, she was going to be the mother of my baby. She deserved to have a good and relaxing weekend.

I’d tried marrying for love and I knew how that went. This time I was being smarter. I was marrying Maria to provide a family environment for my child. Plus, I was not averse to companionship. That was all.

The car pulled up in front of the bakery and I jumped out. A lightness came over my chest as I hit the buzzer. I was really looking forward to the weekend away and most especially of taking Maria to Paris. The passport had been tricky but I’d managed to slip it into our conversation and not give her time to ask questions.

The door buzzed and I pushed it open and entered. I took the stairs two at a time and when I reached the top, her apartment door was already open.

“You really need to tell me where we’re going,” Maria said, walking into the living room carrying an overnight bag.

She looked so gorgeous in fitted jeans, a sexy cream blouse and a leather jacket slung on her arm. I took the bag and kissed her on the mouth. Her scent surrounded me and her body brushed against mine, making me forget everything except how much I wanted her in my arms.

“You look beautiful,” I said. “And my lips are sealed. You’ll find out when we get there.” She complained but I could see that she was enjoying the mystery.

Paige had hated surprises and wanted to know every detail of the day or evening. It was fun being with someone who loved being surprised. I carried her bag downstairs to the trunk of the car and followed her into the back seat.

“I’ve never done this,” she said, her eyes gleaming.

I took her hand and sandwiched it in mine. “Done what?”

“Took off for a weekend without knowing where I was going. It’s fun and crazy,” she said and peered out the window.

I laughed. “It’s too early to search for clues. We’ve just left the bakery.”

“I know,” she said and sat back, getting more comfortable in her seat. “Your mother came by today and now all my employees know that we’re getting married. They want to bake us a massive cake.”

“I second that,” I said.

“Anyway, your mom wanted to talk about the wedding. I tried telling her that we haven’t decided on the date but she wouldn’t hear of it. She said that between the two of us, we could come up with a suitable date and then she could get the ball rolling.
