Chapter TWELVE
âI donât know anyone by the name of Patri-,â as soon as the name started to roll off of her tongue she placed two and two together.
âPatrick Bennett is the man that youâve been gushing about like a love struck puppy and going crazy over for the last few months,â Ms. Cruz asked with large wide eyes. âDios Mio Senor,â she said as she took a seat next to Tammy.
Tammy sat there confused as she watched Jason pace back and forth while Ms. Cruz prayed to God in Spanish, something she rarely did.
All Tammy could think about was how she had managed to fall for a man, much less so fast, who of all things was a drug dealer.
In the time she had been spending with him she had completely opened up to Rick. She had told him some of her deepest and darkest secrets while letting her guard down and completely allowing herself to be free and naked for him. Without shedding a single piece of clothing, she had allowed him to get further inside of her than any man she had ever been physically intimate with. She managed to fall dangerously and passionately in love with his mind which made everything about him even more desirable to her than he had been before.
She sat there completely bewildered. How had the only man she had ever let get into her heart and mind like that be the one thing she truly despised?
Once Ms. Cruz was done praying, she placed her arm around Tammy. Although Tammy hadnât said a word, she knew that she was hurt and confused. In all of the years she had known Tammy and through all of the conversations that they had had, she learned that Tammy had a very hard time showing emotions and letting others see the softer, more vulnerable side of her. Ms. Cruz was sure it came from the relationship she had witnessed and experienced from her own parents and step father although Tammy had only talked about it briefly once.
***
âI always thought my mom and step pops hated me,â she said with a nervous chuckle. âMy step pops never addressed me by my name and he always just called me âwhatâs her nameâ. My mother used to beat my ass with anything and for anything. I got all of the beatings and she would be until she got tired and my siblings would go off free.
They hated the fact that I was so different and refused to conform to what they thought I should be.
I took care of myself and my family at all cost. Sometimes it required me to lie or manipulate others, but I never did it just for selfish reasons. They would enjoy the fruits of my labor, but talk about me like a dog once it was all dead and gone.
They all hated the fact that Iâm exactly like Lino. They said he was a liar, a manipulating user and I was going to be the one to grow up just like him.
