Sitting in a gentlemen’s drinking club didn’t interest Christopher. He wanted to get drunk but the idea of drowning his troubles in front of prying eyes didn’t appeal to him. When he arrived at his quarters, he was in a foul temper, which did not improve when he stormed upstairs and promptly tangled himself in a hanging rack of Zelma’s gowns. A string of curses and a torn hem later, he fought his way to his bedroom door as black thoughts swirled through his head.

Why the hell did his aunt feel the need to use the hallway as a closet?

“Damnation!” He realized he forgot to bring up a bottle of scotch. He hurtled out of his room, straight into his aunt’s maid, Chrissy. At her squeak of alarm, he spat out a quick apology and rocketed down the stairs. Annoyed at the female fripperies that cluttered his home, he stalked to the liquor cabinet in the parlor. When had his life become something from a Shakespearean farce and not a very good one at that?

Sloshing a healthy dose of the amber liquid into a glass, he knew it wouldn’t soothe the upheaval inside. He knew where it stemmed from. The moment he met Lily Henderson, his well-ordered life cracked and crumbled. He downed the first glass by the time he crossed the parlor floor. As he dropped heavily into a leather chair, he wished he had never broached the subject of the wager. By the time the third glassful disappeared, he wished Lily Henderson would go to the devil.

He wished the wager were over and the consequences extracted. Lust slammed into him at the thought of Lily naked on horseback, her curves gilded by sunlight, her caramel locks flowing over pale shoulders. Abandoning the glass in favor of the bottle, he took a deep swig then loosened his bowtie. There was no logical reason that a woman like Lily could arouse him so completely. She was trouble. She was much too ambitious for her own good. The woman was a nuisance. He groaned and swallowed another mouthful of liquor.

Miss Henderson had gotten into his head and that meant trouble.
