Late morning hung cool and gray as he strutted into Holt Body Fitness a couple hours later. The familiar glass walls tunneled ahead, showcasing the patrons inside the gym like they were extras in a trendy commercial. At the reception desk, Travis stood with his arms crossed, squinting down at something on the desk that Melanie showed him.
âWhat up, fam.â Lex held out his fist for a bump from Travis.
âMorning, bro.â Travis tapped his knuckles against Lexâs.
Melanie smirked up at him. âYou look chipper this morning.â
âI canât tell if youâre being sarcastic or not,â Lex said.
âIâm serious! Ever since that cute little blonde girl started showing up hereâ¦â
Travis snorted. âYeah. Lex has a girlfriend.â
âI donât know if sheâd call us that yet, but yeah, basically.â Lex beamed down at Melanie. âSo, whatâs new today?â
Melanie shrugged, clicking through some screens. âSchedules are posted for next week. Lex, youâve got a new eleven oâclock training session, a new guy who wants to get into the camp.â
âHe needs to see you before he can join camp though,â Travis said. âVet him.â When that warning came with a new camp potential, it usually meant Travis wanted an extra set of eyes to scan for the main red flags: steroids or gang affiliation.
âGot it. Anything else?â
Melanie pinched an eye shut as she thought, swiveling in her chair. âUh, thatâs it. Oh, some guy kept calling this morning and asking for a Cheshire.â She made a face up at the two of them. âSounded like a creep, too. I told him to quit calling.â
Lexâs stomach bottomed out. He replayed her words in his mind a few times, âCheshireâ echoing like it had been shouted into a tunnel. Travis ran a hand through his hair, brow furrowed as he nodded.
âCool. Iâll be in my office for a minute, guys.â He sent a quizzical look to Lex, to which Lex nodded.
âYeah. Iâm gonna go gear up for the clients.â He cleared his throat, forcing his legs to move behind Travis, following him toward the employee hallway. When they were out of earshot of Melanie, Travis slowed.
âDude.â Travis held out a hand, gripped Lexâs shoulder. âIn the underground circuitâ¦werenât youâ¦?â
Lex swallowed an icy knot, barely able to see past the hammering thoughts. So he hadnât escaped this guyâs sights so easily. âWhat?â
âCheshire.â Travisâs brown eyes shone with concern.
Lex moved his jaw back and forth. âYeah. But I donât knowâ¦â
âWhoâ¦?â
A defeated burst of air escaped his lips. Lex rested his palms behind his head. The implications of fielding a call like that at work, his fucking workplace, sent rage and despair spiraling through him. These guys wouldnât stop with the call. Oh no. This was a warning. But did Travis know that?
âIâm not Cheshire anymore,â Lex finally said, jerking his gaze up to meet Travisâs. âI havenât been for years. I donât know why the fuck someone is calling here asking for that name.â
Travisâs jaw tensed as he watched him, nodding hard. âOkay. Yeah. I figured.â
âIâm not too happy about it, either.
