Create a Compelling Case for Change
Once youâve clarified how a change disruption came to be (if necessary), communicate the case for change to your team in a compelling, relevant way, so they catch the vision of it. Draft and share a memorable story your team can understand and easily retell about where the team/organization is going, why they are going there, and what the journey will look like. Use prompts like the following:
1. Describe the problem or opportunity targeted by the change.
⢠âWe have been struggling withâ¦â
⢠âWe have been planning toâ¦â
2. Describe how the change solves the problem or creates the opportunity.
⢠âThe change we are making isâ¦â
⢠âSo weâve decided toâ¦â
3. Share the benefits of the change for the team and the organization.
⢠âWhen we make this change successfully, we willâ¦â [Describe the outcomes it will achieve or opportunities it will create.]
⢠âIf we succeed with this change, we will prevent/solve/overcomeâ¦â [Describe the problems it will solve or issues it will resolve.]
4. Share the challenges of the change (be as transparent as you can). Share any bad news they should know (information that is legal and appropriate to share).
⢠âI know this means we willâ¦â
⢠âWhen we make the change, we will have toâ¦â
5. Share initial ideas on how to address the challenges together.
⢠âI think we can handle these challenges byâ¦â
⢠âWe have overcome challenges like this in the past, such asâ¦â
6. Summarize what you are moving from and what you are moving to.
⢠âAs we make this change, we will move from⦠toâ¦â [Be as specific as you can about required behavior or procedural changes, as well as the new outcomes the changes will need to produce. There should be multiple âfrom-toâ statements focusing on behaviors, actions, and results that should change.]
