Darcy leaned back in the carriage, rubbing his temple with two fingers as he made a futile attempt to sleep. His head still pounded with pain and assaulting thoughts and images of Elizabeth.

He had hoped that once he was away from Netherfield and had left every reminder of her dancing eyes, sparkling wit, and intelligent conversation behind, he would be able to put her out of his heart and mind.

All he had to do was to think on those things about her that were not to his liking.

He closed his eyes as he tried to bring those points to mind. First and foremost, was her attachment to Bingley – in spite of everything about him that was wrong for her. Could she not see that? Did she continue to receive his addresses solely because marrying him would take away worries about the future for her family? He pounded the seat with his fist.

Why was she so blinded to how well suited he was for her? Was Wickham correct in his assertion that she found him unpardonable? Was her opinion of him formed the first night they met when she overheard him cautioning Bingley about singling her out so soon?

He shook his head. While he had known practically nothing about Elizabeth when they met at the Meryton Assembly, he was aware that despite being one of the kindest men he had ever known, Bingley could readily talk himself out of an attachment when someone nicer, prettier, or more to his liking came along. He had seen it happen many times before.

Just outside London, Darcy fell asleep. He was wrong, however, in believing sleep would remove Elizabeth from his thoughts, for there she was in his dreams. What made it worse was that Wickham had also invaded his dreams and was at her side sneering at him in derision.
