Iawake several hours later. The fire is banked, the flames low, and I lie on my side. That sense of guilt creeps up on me again, as I stare into the flames. I’ve had another safe, secure sleep, the best I’ve had since being captured by the Skulchers, and there are others in need of rescue. Sure, Lisa, Katie, and Melanie are safe and relatively comfortable in the bridge, but the ladies in the cargo hold likely aren’t. I can’t imagine the condition they’re in… and then of course there’s Briley and Meg, both alone out there somewhere.

I shudder at the thought and shut my eyes. The memory of feeling utterly lost and alone on the planet, desperate for sight of the ship hits me. Only two days ago, I was consumed by that desolateness, and now here I am, comfortable by a warm fire. The ship may be out of sight again, but I saw it, I know it’s there, and I have assurance from Axyll that he’ll take me to it.

Axyll. My heart melts at the thought of the wolf-shifting alien. So handsome and mysterious, with the dazzling gem in his forehead and impeccable abs. Another thing I feel guilty about, as I think back on our kiss, about the way he caresses my face and makes me feel secure. About how right it feels to be with him despite holding little more conversation than an introduction due to the language barrier.

Some things are just meant to be, a voice whispers in my head. I blush at that thought. Then I notice there are soft voices speaking in the cave.

I slowly sit up and peer over my shoulder. Nyfer is whispering softly to small, rustling shapes. Her voice is tender and sweet, and there is a familiar rhythmic movement to it. A small arm reaches up and wraps itself around her arm, and she reaches over and strokes one of the rustling movements.

It’s the arm of a child. She is singing or telling a story to her children, I realize. They’re curled up together, three or four of them, all limbs over limbs as they huddle together, and she tucks furs around them. I then glance over and notice another small form tucked into a crevice into the wall, one pale blue arm sticking out from under a fur. Her daughter, likely.

And suddenly, I feel like an intruder. Here I am, snoozing in the family home, and she’s trying to keep her young kids quiet so they don’t wake me. It’s quite a cozy place, the more I look around. The bedding areas are separated and defined. I guess my spot is for patients, as Nyfer seems to be the healer of the pack. There is a ledge carved into one wall where there is an array of pouches, baskets, and carved bone or stone boxes. It’s homey, and it brings a smile to my face.

One of the boys notices me, and whispers something. Nyfer looks over her shoulder and smiles at me.
