CHAPTER 13

Ermin

That afternoon, the sun came out.

Rommy was lying on the painted canvas roof of the aft cabin feeling quite pleased. He had stood up for himself and what he had believed in and the situation had worked out well in the end. Plus, it was now sunny and almost warm and he was full of the thrill of being alive. He rolled over on his back just to feel the sensation of the surface touching his body and then, wriggled from side to side, paws dabbing at imaginary things just above him, green eyes squinting at the blue sky. He sighed. Life was great, he had made up with his brother and he had a full belly. On returning to the boat, they had just caught Mrs. Moggs before she went out. Plenty of ankle rubbing and “look at me I’m cute” had facilitated a bowlful of tinned food and now here he was sun bathing and feeling good.

He watched languidly as his twin leapt from the quayside onto the side-deck and from there on to the roof to join him. They briefly touched noses before Reemy laid himself out next to him.

“I’m pooped,” Reemy said. “It’s all go!”

“Sure is!”

“Any sign of Buggs yet?”

“Nope.”

“What are we going to do next?”

“Nothing.”

“Okay, I’ll get some sleep!”

“If you feel you must!”

Reemy stretched luxuriously and closed his eyes, the winter sun glowing pink through his eyelids. He sighed happily; life was great.

The twins dozed for five minutes and were then disturbed by the sound of human voices. It was not unusual for people to appear in the boatyard. The chandler’s shop enjoyed a thriving trade, being the only one in the area, but these voices were different—younger. Rommy opened one eye and saw Old Ted and a young couple looking at one of the recently moved moored narrowboats close to the slipway.

When Old Ted produced a key for the double doors set into the superstructure midway down the boat and stepped aboard with the couple in tow, Rommy sat up and took proper notice. The boat shifted uneasily on its mooring ropes as the three humans moved about in its interior. After a few minutes, the people reappeared and walked up and down the quayside looking at the exterior of the craft. After some dialogue with Old Ted, they shook hands and the couple turned to leave the yard. In doing so, they spotted the twins lying on the roof looking at them. The thin, medium height woman clapped her hands together and crossed the slipway to get a closer look saying, “Oh, how sweet, what an adorable pair of twins. Aren’t they lovely?”

“Beautiful,” agreed her similarly built partner. “Are they yours?” he asked Old Ted.

“No,” the old man replied. “They belong to the Moggs. This is their boat. You’ll probably meet them while you’re here.”

“Lovely, I’ll look forward to that,” the slim woman said. “Bye for now,” and she blew a kiss at the bemused kittens, before walking to the gate with her companion.
