Leo

Okay, so I knew exactly who would be waiting on the other side of that door the moment I heard the gentle knock. Normally, when someone knocks on my door it’s more of a rude pound to let me know that dinner was on the table or I was hogging the washing machine.

Not to mention, Gabe was home for the weekend, which meant the girls would undoubtedly be coming by.

When I heard Reagan’s polite tapping, I realized that I had a moment to get dressed before opening it. But where was the fun in that?

Reagan’s feathers were easily ruffled these days, and as it turned out, ruffling them was my new favorite thing to do.

“That was some rehearsal,” I replied with a crooked smile, watching her eyes dart around as if she was trying not to stare at my bare chest and was failing miserably.

I glanced behind Reagan for any sign of the others, but with the exception of ESPN playing on a loop on the TV downstairs, the house was quiet. I’d lived in the house long enough to know that when Mr. Maxwell was working late or out on business, Landon was with Harper, whether it was in his room upstairs or out doing whatever it was those two did. It wasn’t my business.

Reagan was currently going to town biting her lip and fidgeting with the long strands of her hair, we were right in the middle of a big decision. We could do as the others and shut ourselves behind these closed doors or we could do something else...just the two of us.

Normally, I’d be leaning into the former.

I take that back.

Normally, I’d be running head first straight into the former. I’d drop this towel right now, and let things go where they naturally go. There wouldn’t be any deliberating or choices to make.

But as I’ve learned already, things with Reagan were anything but normal for me, and for the first time, I was spending more and more of my time with a girl I actually wanted to be around. I liked to hear her talk, and there was still so much we didn’t know about each other.

“How about I get some clothes on and you and I can go for a walk?” I asked, and I watched the relief wash over her face. I don’t think Reagan would have been opposed to me dropping the towel and pulling her into the room, but it seemed like all we did together was dance and makeout.

Once I reappeared fully dressed, I found her sitting on the patio seat out front with her nose in a paperback romance.

“Do you carry one of those with you at all times?” I asked.

She smiled and shoved it back into her shoulder bag. “Yes, in case of emergencies,” she said with a serious expression. “You know...like always being the third wheel and being ditched so your two best friends can go...do whatever it is they’re doing right now.”

My eyebrows shot up at her, and I watched her cheeks redden.
