They made good time after that, even though Henderson had to stop about every quarter of a mile. The aches, bruises, and pains didnât subside, but Lamattina had earlier picked up a small bottle of Tylenol in the convenience store, and heâd shoveled a few into his mouth.
They hadnât come under any scrutiny, and even though the city to the west was lit up like a massive Christmas tree where the attack had taken place, their careful path had taken them far enough outside of the zone of operations that they were free to move.
After what seemed like hours, they finally arrived on the outskirts of the hotel Lamattina had mentioned. They crept into the parking lot, and she found a place behind the right rear corner that would keep them out of sight. The hotel wasnât completely lit up, but there was some power. At least the âVacancyâ sign was on.
âIâll be right back. If anyone approaches, you need to move. Donât make eye contact. Keep your head down and donât talk to anyone. People are scared right now, and theyâll be more likely to not want to confront a homeless person.â
âHow long will you be?â
âHopefully less than fifteen minutes,â Lamattina said before moving off.
Henderson found a spot out of direct light and lowered himself so he could put his back against the wall. He kept the hoodie drawn, but his eyes roamed the area.
He checked his Rolex Yacht-Master II, a gift from his old friend Preston Whitfield, and found that it was near midnight. For eight or more hours they had been on the run with nary a break. His body ached, his feet hurt, and his right hip throbbed. He needed his medications, not all of them, but he did take something for atrial fibrillation, as well as a beta-blocker due to mild blood pressure. He had the plastic bag of pills in a pocket, and maybe he could sort them later and remember which were the most important.
âLetâs go, sir,â Lamattina said as she put her hand on his shoulder.
He jolted to his feet because he had dozed off, and the agentâs return had nearly sent his heart galloping to the races. Henderson patted his chest and then rose on shaking feet.
