THE ALCHEMY RECIPE calls for gold, fire, earth, and salt. We put in the gold from Eliza’s earring. Eliza lights an emergency match for fire. We grab earth from the dirt. And the salt comes from the potato chips in my bag.

A recipe for success!

Psssssss! Something white and gassy comes spitting out of the walls. It’s making me really drowsy. I fall to my knees, and so do Eliza and Frank beside me.

“It’s some kind of poison gas,” Eliza chokes. “A sleeping powder.”

Frank starts snoring immediately.

“Witchcraft?” I say, feeling light-headed, trying to hide my nose in my shirt.

“Alchemy,” Eliza whispers as she falls asleep.

CASE CLOSED.
