Thurstan Martin rode up to the white house with the dangerous looking man on the wide porch. He’d seen him earlier today with Anne-Marie, claiming to be her husband. That relationship couldn’t be, but even if it was, that situation didn’t matter. Soon this man would be dead.

Thurstan palmed his derringer. He wasn’t fast enough with the Colt he’d just bought in the little hick town of Golden City. But the derringer wouldn’t kill a man unless close up, so he put away the derringer and pulled the Colt, keeping it in his lap.

He supposed the town was quaint, but it was nothing compared to St. Louis. How could Anne-Marie prefer living here? He supposed her leaving St. Louis was his fault. He shouldn’t have shown her his proclivity toward beating women, but he enjoyed it so much. Enjoyed seeing her grovel after he’d hit her. Enjoyed pretending all was well, so she’d stand and he could beat her all over again for not asking permission to rise. Enjoyed the feeling of her soft flesh giving way to his fists.

“Send her out Monroe and I’ll leave in peace.” Thurstan called, leaving his right hand holding his pistol on the saddle in front of him. The fool doesn’t even have his gun out. This incident will be like a clay pigeon shoot.

Carter shouted back. “She’s not leaving, not now, not ever. She’s my wife, Martin. Get used to the reality. She’ll never be yours. Even if you manage to kill me, you won’t ride out of here. You’re surrounded.”

Panic gripped him. He looked slowly around and saw that men with weapons did indeed circle him. If he managed to kill Monroe, he would die just after the feat.

“You may have won this round, but you won’t always be backed up by your men. I’ll kill you and then I’ll marry Anne-Marie afterward.”

Carter narrowed his eyes and finally drew his weapon. “Never. She’ll never marry you. I suggest you leave and never darken my doorstep again.”

Thurstan looked around again and saw he couldn’t escape if he fired his gun. He started to turn his horse, but stopped.

More determined than ever, he narrowed his eyes. “You best watch your back, Monroe.”
