‘Neither would I,’ he chuckled, pulling her back down into the hay.

‘Maxim,’ she gasped. Sensing he was about to become carried away again she placed her hand on his shoulder and forced him back a little, despite his resistance. She looked at him in desperate appeal for him to stop kissing her so that she could make sense of all this. ‘I don’t understand what you are saying—what it means.’

He sighed. ‘Are you so casual about the way you look—the way you are—that you are not aware of the effect it has on me? I am no saint, Lavinia. The very sight of you, the feel of you in my arms, knowing you are my wife, wrenches at my insides, twisting them so painfully that my whole body aches for release. My passion for you is hard-driven. I crave to have you as my wife—in my bed.’

Gnawing on her bottom lip, she gazed up at him. ‘Are you telling me that you no longer want to end our marriage?’

‘Do you?’ he murmured, the warm light of desire in his eyes as he lowered his head, his kisses playing tantalisingly upon her lips.

‘Please don’t be evasive, Maxim.’

Lavinia sighed when he continued to kiss her. He was being quite impossible.

Hearing the plea in her voice, Maxim raised his head and smiled down at her. ‘All right. I will tell you that lying here with you in my arms, feeling how willingly you respond to my attentions, makes me unwilling to release you. I know I am bound by our agreement made at the beginning, but it will be hard for me to break the vows we made to each other and before God.’

‘I know,’ Lavinia whispered. Having been brought up in the church, this troubled her also. She had been uneasy about the whole affair from the start.
