CHAPTER 6

WHEN FOOD GETS PERSONAL

The modern world is undeniably busy. From swamped businesspeople to panicking parents, there are a lot of people who simply don’t have time to get in front of the stove and prepare meals. On top of that, think of all the clueless cooks out there—some people don’t have the skill to make the food they’d like to eat. What can these people do? For those with enough money, it’s possible to hire a personal chef.

As the title implies, these cooks don’t work in a restaurant, instead they are getting paid by a single customer (or group of clients) to cook personalized meals in their home. Because personal chefs don’t have the security of an entire restaurant behind them, they have to be true masters of their craft. Most successful personal chefs are classically trained and have strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Most chefs don’t step out of the kitchen often—but a personal chef only works in full view of their customers. This can be highly stressful, but the job is also very rewarding for those who thrive on small-scale interactions.
