EIGHTEEN

Chase

I quickly grab our things and toss them in the back of one of the cars. It’s a temporary solution until I can find something better. Maybe the whole train idea isn’t such a bad idea?

“You ready?” I keep my voice gentle, not wanting to startle Cara. I don’t know how she’s handling her first kill. She killed a man to save my life, but now she displays classic signs of shock.

She nods, eyes wide, unblinking, like a deer in the headlights—frozen in fear and unable to speak. A beat late, her reactions lag behind where they should be and she moves woodenly and robotic. The poor thing’s on autopilot, her mind struggling to process what happened.

“C’mon.” I take her hand and lead her to the car. “We have to get out of here before more men come.”

She follows me silently, seeming to understand what’s going on without needing further explanation. I hold the door for her and she slides into the passenger seat, fastening her seatbelt with a trembling hand. She looks out at the carnage left behind with an expression equal parts relief and horror.

I take off my rucksack and rummage through it until I find what I’m looking for: a satellite phone full of Guardian HRS magic. I connect with Command and Control to report the second string of bodies I leave behind.

“Any idea how they tracked you down?” Sam’s tone is nearly as flat as mine.

“I’m struggling to answer that.” I slip into the driver’s seat and crank the engine. It roars to life, and I exit the motel parking lot as fast as I can. “It’s not the watch. We left that far behind us. My primary concern is our little gunfight will draw the authorities. The one thing Cara can’t afford is to be detained by the local police. That will attract even more attention.”

“We’ll make the appropriate calls,” CJ speaks up, his Texan drawl the only thing distinguishing his deep voice from Sam’s. “You’re definitely setting a record for the highest body count during a mission.”

“Definitely not my intent.” The morbid statement finds me shaking my head. First assignment with the Guardians and Protectors and I’m already setting the wrong records.

Need to squash that fast.

“Sam’s on the line with the local police.” CJ clears his throat. “The shots were called in, and they’re on the way. Best you vacate ASAP.”

“Already on it.”

“We’ll manage the scene from this end. Meanwhile, do what you do best. Ditch the car. Find alternate transportation. And drop off the face of the earth.”

Drop off the face of the earth.

“That’s been the plan this whole time, but somehow, they keep finding us.”

“Understood. I don’t have any insight. Just do what you do best.” CJ gives me my marching orders.

“Copy that.”

I glance at Cara. She’s back to the finger-twisting thing. I know her well enough to know that’s what she does when stressed. A shadow hangs over her as she stares out the window. I can’t tell if she’s following my conversation with Sam and CJ or is completely zoned out.
