Chapter Twelve

Bethany

We rode for hours until the sun started to set low in the sky. By the time we left the outer wall that surrounded my home and rose garden, we’d passed more than a dozen of my people heading for the safety of those walls. I knew getting everyone there would be hard, it would take days for some, but it was the safest place.

“What all do you know of these things?” Rory asked, keeping an ever-watchful gaze on the trees around us as the path went from an open field to lines of bushy trees and bushes.

“They’re fast and they roam together in packs, like wolves. I’m not sure why they do this, but if there is one then they will all follow. The strongest is always the leader, though I’ve never been told how they choose since they never think for themselves anymore....”

“Would it be the White Rabbit picking for them? Allowing them out of the barrier?”

That was a good question. It had taken the three kingdoms to place them inside and to build up the force field with the blood ritual that pulled their magic.

We’d all assumed it was unbreakable because it held some of Wonderland’s magic. That is what Mad Hatter had promised us. He was the greatest scientist in our lands, his mix of light and dark magic had been used by all the ruling families at one point or another because he was the best of the best. He came up with the idea of the barrier dome and even quoted that using our magic as one to pull the power from Wonderland core was more powerful than using it alone.

“I don’t think the rabbit had anything to do with this… only one of the bloodlines could break the barrier that ties their magic to the core, and I don’t see any of them doing this. Unless… Alex. What if this was what he meant? The dome is the strongest bit of magic we have inside all of Wonderland. Would he use that to get back at us, I wonder?”

“Then what part of this realm would see to it that you fall?”

I hadn’t thought of that.

At the time the barrier was made there had only been four ruling families and the Hatter. I’d taking my fathers place but since I was too young at the time, I’d only been there to bear witness to the event, offering my guards as help. Alex, Caesar and David’s father had been there. Out of all of them, Alex was the only one I currently had an unspoken problem with.

The three kings had come together to build a barrier and place all the creatures inside, where they’d stayed for years. No other creatures had been made once they were locked away, and we hadn’t had to deal with them since they’d been caged.

“I’ve heard they can turn you, if you’re bitten.”

That was one thing that could happen. If they choose to bite you and let you live. The Virus traveled like a wildfire once a bite was in place.
