Chapter twenty

CHOSEN BY THE GRIFFIN KING

Amira

Four Days Ago

I woke in the morning to find that Riordan was gone, and his cot was already put away.

“He went to get you food,” Nell said through a yawn, guessing my concerns correctly when I sat up to glance around. “But do not worry, he solemnly charged me with your safety while he was gone. Shifters,” she muttered with a roll of her eyes.

“I guess shifters are really protective?”

“That’s an understatement,” the dryad assured me, clearly affronted. “But I could have managed just fine without being told. I’ve only been caring for you for the last three years, and I think I did alright. He left some water for you on the table,” she added.

“I thought you were supposed to be his loyal servant?” I teased my friend as I slid eagerly to the edge of the mattress to grab the glass of water on the nightstand. I’d been worried I might be ill in the morning, but I felt fine. Just a little tired.

Nell scoffed at me.

“I won’t be tripping on myself for you just yet,” my friend warned, and my head cocked in confusion while I also tried not to laugh at her misuse of the proverbial phrase.

“Why would you?” I asked before I began sipping water gratefully. After a moment, I noticed she was staring at me in loaded silence.

“Amira, I know I’m not the only one who has noticed that the King of the Vale clearly has romantic intentions for you.”

I lowered my eyes to the glass in my hand which Riordan had so thoughtfully left for me while I pondered her assertion.

“What would it mean exactly? A dalliance with a king,” I clarified when her brows rose. “Why would anyone trip over themselves?”

“A dalliance?” she repeated in evident confusion.

“Casual sex,” I explained, trying to keep my tone light and comfortable as if this was something I could handle.

“I am aware of what a dalliance is, Amira, but that is not what is happening right now. The Imítheos, the elite griffins like the king, mate for life. I told you they were boring!” she reminded me when my brows shot up in shock at this unexpected revelation.

The cool, damp glass in my hand almost slipped through my fingers as I sat staring at my friend, but I caught it at the last second, splashing only a little water on my nightshirt.

“And I was supposed to just know that by ‘boring’ you meant that they mate for life?”

“What did you think I meant?”

“I have— But he’s a king!” I protested a little shrilly as I fumbled to set the glass down on the side table and shook the water droplets off my hands. “You don’t think he actually wants me to—”

“I do think he wants you, which would make you his royal consort and hopefully the future mother of the next royal heir, so you might say that people will in fact trip on themselves,” Nell smirked at me.

“That’s not— We just met!” I insisted, my brain feeling suddenly sluggish as I tried to think.
