Chapter 9

NARISSA

I watched as Tarius left me standing on the edge of the dock. The transport ship was much smaller than the Hyperion. It also looked very dirty.

I stood by waiting as he spoke to the captain of the ship. Peering off in the city's direction, I wondered how well I could fare there. If I shed the Qroent garments and made myself look more masculine, perhaps I could make a living. While we were in transit, I looked up information on Zabri. It had a great deal of cultural diversity, a settling place for many races of aliens. With the auditory device neatly implanted behind my ear, I could surely understand the beings in the streets of the Zabri city.

I took my chances as Tarius was speaking with the captain of the transport ship. I would not go back to the embassy and the boring life on Feng'masi. I rushed around the boardwalk and headed toward the major thoroughfare. I threw off the filmy outer covering of the Qroent outfit. I wish I had taken one of the android outfits from his ship. I made my way back to the Hyperion. His crew had already gone into the city and left the ship behind. As I climbed aboard the ship no one noticed. I quickly rushed to a small storage room and contemplated hiding there and waiting until the ship took off before showing Tarius as I was onboard. But then, if he found me, he would probably drag me off of the ship and send me back to Feng'masi anyway. He didn’t want me, after all.

I scurried along the corridor to the ship's laundry facility. The uniforms of the android kind neatly lined the wall. I grabbed an outfit and quickly changed into it, the white clothing of the android in stark contrast to what I was already wearing. I grabbed one of the blue jackets and quickly folded it until it turned into a sash around my midsection. I then picked up a head dressing, making myself look more masculine. I was still small and somewhat feminine looking, but at least I didn’t look like a Qroent. Nor did I look like a Terran. I made my way to the door and quickly exited the ship. By now, Tarius would have discovered that I was no longer with him. I had to get to the city quickly. Up and down the long dusty road red dirt plumed with the stiff breeze. Reaching down, I dug my fingers into the dirt and traced along my cheekbone. It had to give me an uncommon look, one that is not of a Terran. I quickly rubbed the dark stain onto my eyelids, and underneath giving my eyes a sunken appearance. Now, satisfied that I looked different enough, I moved along the thoroughfare toward the city. There were enough beings going along that no one paid any attention to me. It reminded me of being back on Earth in one of the enormous cities where people ignored each other as they moved along with their busy lives.
