CHAPTER 11 - Evil Twin

For about a minute, Danny was treated to one side of a phone conversation. “No,” said Caprice. Then, after a few seconds, “No. No. Of course not.” Another pause. “No.” Another pause. “Well, I should think not. He’s here with me. Yes. New York. That’s right. I’m taking him to see Sullivan.” Another pause. “That’s not really your purview. No. No, that won’t be necessary.” Finally, after a few more seconds. “That would be fine.” She snapped the phone shut and put it in her pocket.

“So,” said Danny. “Who was on the phone?”

“That’s nowhere near as clever as you think it is.”

The retort took him aback. He was quite certain he had now caught her in some elaborate lie. Rather than sheepishness or defensiveness, her reaction was to be singularly unimpressed. But then, the fact that she gave him no explanation for being in two places at one time made him realize that he really didn’t know the answer to that question. So, he tried again. “I’m not trying to be clever,” he said, ignoring the fact that he had indeed been trying to be clever. “Who was that?”

“You know who it was.”

“No, I don’t think I do. Moe said that person was you. Obviously, she’s not, so why would he think that?”

Caprice bit her lip, and shifted her eyes away from his gaze. It astounded Danny just how easily and convincingly she could shift from threatening to vulnerable. The transition was so fluid he almost apologized for asking. “It’s complicated,” she said.

“Complicated? How could something like that possibly be complicated?” Her eyes shifted left, up, around, and anywhere but in his direction. While they did that, the sparkly pink faded to light gray, and refilled with a blue so natural he saw her, for the first time, as an ordinary girl. In that instant, he experienced a profound flash of doubt in his entire reality. Right then, more than anything else, he wanted her to be the ordinary girl she appeared to be. For a fleeting moment, she was again his innocent office crush. Then her eyes flickered like a bad florescent light bulb, and the moment was lost. He gulped.

“Evil twin?” he prompted.

“We’re not twins,” she said quietly.

A silence so profound followed that statement, Danny believed he could hear his watch ticking in a full restaurant. He shook his head. “Caprice? I’m out.”

She turned her eyes back on his. Blue. Innocent. Beautiful. Flickering. “What’s that? You’re out?”

He sat back in his seat, and folded his arms. “I’m out. I have no idea what I’m supposed to say next. Okay, you’re some sort of alien freak thing, and the world isn’t what I thought it was, and nothing will ever be the same for me. I get that. I really do. I’m on board with it. But seriously, what the hell am I supposed to say to you right now? You just got off the phone with yourself. It’s not that I’m surprised. I ran out of surprise when you poofed out of existence in the park.
