Chapter Nine

Great move, Gabrielle. Just great.

Gabrielle sank onto her couch and pulled the throw cover around her shoulders as she leaned back against the plush pillows. She was mortified at the spectacle she’d put on. At that moment she felt that Penelope had hit the nail on the head. She was just a fake Cinderella, and the midnight bell had certainly chimed for her, except there was no slipper to leave behind for Prince Maxwell to use to find her. If he even wanted to.

What would she tell April when she called for an update? Oh, I was pretty as can be—until I lost a contact, bumped into a waiter, spilled wine on my dress, and made a complete and total ass of myself. Gabrielle felt tears of embarrassment, disappointment, and frustration gathering in her eyes.

On top of everything else, at one point during dinner Maxwell had started avoiding her for the rest of the night. Had she scared him away with her boldness? She had only flirted because she thought she’d picked up on cues that let her know he was attracted to her.

“I’m going to strangle both April and Clayton,” she muttered darkly, enjoying a rather vivid vision of doing just that.

What a night. She pulled the throw over her head, wishing she could pray the whole night away. She had to just face the facts. As much as she loved Maxwell and desired Maxwell and wanted to do the hokey-pokey with Maxwell, he didn’t feel the same way about her. She had to move on with her life. The daydreams of a fairy-tale wedding and the hot erotic fantasies of long nights of wicked sex all had to cease.

Better said than done. Surrounded by the darkness of her home and swamped by the memories of her embarrassing evening, Gabrielle was glad when sleep finally made her lids heavy. Maybe in my dreams I won’t be such a dork.

“Gabrielle?”

Her eyes shot open beneath the throw. Frowning at the sound of Maxwell’s voice, she pulled the cover down slightly and looked into his face, which was highlighted by moonlight gleaming through the window. “Maxwell? Why aren’t you at your party?”

“To hell with that party. I left Addie to escort them all out,” he told her with a huge grin that made him even sexier.

Gabrielle actually smiled as she pictured that going down.

“Hey, why are you crying?” Maxwell asked softly, reaching out to wipe away the track of her tears with his thumb.

“Oh, I don’t know, maybe because I just made a fool of myself,” she answered, hating that tears were welling up in her eyes again. Tears that she couldn’t stop from falling for the life of her. All her insecurities came washing back in tidal waves that she felt herself drowning in.

“Aw, damn, don’t cry, Gabrielle,” Maxwell told her huskily, as he sat down on the couch and pulled her upper body into a comforting embrace. “It was just an accident. No big deal. And don’t worry, the ones who laughed were the first ones I let Addie give the boot.
