Chapter 15

Candela

I speed up, trying to keep up with Lance’s long strides as we walk through the middle of town. Glancing over my shoulder provides slight relief when I see that nobody is coming after us, even though Artica just literally blasted out an entire wall and busted us out.

It doesn’t mean we’re in the clear, though, as shouts ring out and a siren blares. Despite Lance and Artica’s nonchalance, I’m expecting the cops to come stampeding around the corner any minute now.

“Shouldn’t we be more discreet?” I ask, tucking my chin to my chest as we pass some strangers.

Artica waves away my concern. “It’s fine. I left a note.”

“A note?” I squeak.

Lance slips his fingers into mine as he pulls me along to match his gait. His amusement sparking in his emerald eyes is a sharp contrast against my panic. “Do enlighten us with your plan, Artica. I’m dying to hear this one.”

She sticks her tongue out at him. “I just said that I was borrowing you two until we find the real culprit.”

“Borrow? You mean I’m going back to jail?” I squeak.

Lance pulls me in close and wraps his arm around my waist as we speed away from the scene of the crime. “Never,” he promises, “because we’re going to find who’s responsible and clear your name.”

“What about Peggy?” I ask, glancing around. “We should check on her while we can.”

Lance kisses my knuckles. “You’re sweet to care about others.”

“Can’t,” Artica says with a shrug as she walks backward. “She probably left town. I haven’t seen her since you guys got jailed, and I thought she was with you, but if she’s not, then I’m guessing she bailed.” When I frown, she adds, “I know I would after everything that happened.”

Even though that’s like an icicle to the heart, it’s true. Poor Peggy was almost burned alive, then put in jail all because of me. If she has any sense at all, she’ll run and never come back.

Artica’s eyes grow big as she turns around. “Okay, maybe the note didn’t work.”

A siren blares and I squeak. Lance speeds up his pace as he pulls me along. “Shocking,” he remarks.

We hurry to the first place where we can duck inside, which turns out to be Buttercup’s Bake Shop, normally a place I send supernaturals who are looking for cupcakes of a supernatural variety. I’ve always been grateful for Buttercup, given that I have no magic of my own or knowledge of most of the supernatural preferences in this town.

Artica opens the door and ushers us inside. Familiar scents make my heart pang for my own shop. Warm sugar, bread, and vanilla all mixed together in a mouthwatering aroma that only baking can provide. Similarly, the aesthetics of the shop match the smell, all warm creams and soft yellows, with a hint of sweet pinks and purples. It’s not unlike my own, at least before the fire, and I can understand why it’s always busy.

Lance pulls me aside and peers through the window as two police cars speed by.
