You believe the mud means that Miss Stoner rode on a dog-cart.

You believe the mud means that Miss Stoner walked from the train station.

“An obvious fact,” you reply with confidence. “You walked from the train station this morning, madam. That road is quite muddy.”

Miss Stoner’s face pales. She draws a deep breath and closes her eyes. When she opens them, they shimmer with tears. “You are a cruel man,” she says at last. “For a moment, I had hoped . . .” her voice trails off.

The depth of misery in her eyes and her accusing tone cause you to take a step back.

“You cannot help me,” she whispers. “No one can.” She exits so quickly that it is almost as if she was never there at all.

You stand rooted to your spot, staring numbly at the vacant place where Miss Stoner used to be.

Over the next several weeks, your business slows. Fewer and fewer people come to you for help. Finally the day arrives when you can no longer justify your sign, “Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective.”

Watson strolls up the street just as you remove the sign. He breaks into a hurried jog. “Holmes! What are you doing?” he asks, huffing for breath.

You hold the sign in your hands, running your lean fingers over the letters. “One can no longer call himself a detective if there are no clients who wish him to detect,” you say.

You put your hand on your friend’s shoulder. “Thank you, Watson. It has been intriguing, to say the least.”

You give him a sad smile and pat his shoulder. There is nothing more to say. Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective, is out of business.

Try again.
