PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE: SAYING NO
Practice saying no to the following types of people, and write down or record how youâll say it:
â¢
Boss
â¢
Coworker
â¢
Partner/Spouse
â¢
Parent
â¢
Child
â¢
Other family member
â¢
Friend
â¢
Frenemy
â¢
Neighbor
If role-playing doesnât feel too hokey or contrived, give it a try. There is tremendous power and competence gained by saying the words out loud rather than just thinking them. It will be much easier to say them to someone else when youâve already heard yourself saying them out loud.
Use either an actual or a familiar request youâve gotten from these people to get you started.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The only thing better than good news is bad news fast.
You arenât helping anyone by saying âmaybeâ when the answer will ultimately be âno.â
We all know how it feels when someone does it to usâwe think theyâre rearranging their schedule to accommodate our request and theyâre really just burning through a few days, thinking the lapsed time will soften the blow when they tell us no. Itâs a waste of everyoneâs time and just slows us down on the search for a âyes.â
Practice saying no right away to things you donât want to do or donât have time for.
Practice stopping yourself before you say âbecauseâ or give an excuse or explanation for why the answer is no. You donât have to be smug or meanâyou also donât need to be a doormat.
Never lie to yourself, thinking that you donât control your own life and, by extension, your schedule. With very few exceptions (on-call emergency doctors, for instance), you do. There may be consequences to saying no, but there are also consequences to saying yes. Decide for yourself which is better or worse and then make your choice.
