It was five days before Rowdy and Ted got to the Captain’s house. The rest of the men stayed in town until they heard from them.

The Captain made Rowdy and Ted just as welcome as Caleb. They sat down to a wonderful meal while Caleb and the Captain explained the plan.

Cookie had learned the hard way to take his medicine and not try to get out of bed on his own. Caleb chuckled about the man’s stubborn streak.

“I don’t know what he’s going to do when he finds out he can’t go home with us. The doc says he can’t put any weight on that leg until the stitches heal and he can put him in another splint. That will be another week or two. Then it will be another few weeks before he can travel.”

Ted shook his head. “That will be Christmas, Caleb. Cookie won’t stand for that. He always does up a big Christmas, and since he can’t this year, then we need to do it for him.”

“I know, Ted, but his leg healing is the most important thing. Right now, we need to get word to the men to head on home so they don’t miss Thanksgiving. The best they can do is get there by the day before.”

“What about you?” Rowdy asked between filling his mouth with the delicious food.

Caleb shrugged and glanced at Mitchell. “I wanted to stay until his stitches come out and he gets the new splint on. The doc says he won’t be needing the pain medicine after that and will be able to hobble around some.

“The Captain has been gracious enough to allow me to stay as long as I want, and he’s going to have Cookie moved to a downstairs room when he can get around a bit. He has even offered Cookie a job here until he can get back home. Of course, Cookie doesn’t know it yet, and I thought I may need to stay long enough to convince him.”

“What will we do? Come back and get him?” Ted asked with concern. “I don’t like leaving him for so long.”

“I know, I don’t either. He’s like part of the family, but if the Captain lets him work and feel useful, I hope he will be satisfied with that for a while.

“The Captain wanted to see our ranch and said he would bring Cookie home as soon as the weather breaks. That way, he can stay with us for a few days and see how we run things.”

“You mean he won’t be home until spring?”

“Yes, Ted, now calm down. That’s the best plan we have come up with. If you can come up with a better one, then please tell us.”

Ted slouched. “Cookie isn’t going to like this at all. You know he will pitch a fit. The Captain may be ready to throw him out before spring.”

Captain Merritt laughed. “Caleb has already warned me, but we have a few ideas in store for Cookie. Just don’t you worry.”

Ted and Rowdy stayed the night as guests and spent as much time as possible with Cookie.
