his existence. He was so furious he could hardly see. The man had reacted exactly as Erik had predicted, but for once, being right was little comfort. "You just shut your mouth right now, do you understand me? Just shut. The hell. Up."

Stephanie noticed Erik was shorter than her father, but broader. The part of her that wasn't horrified was noticing everything, it seemed. Her father was lean and hard and terribly tall. He looked like his body had burned up everything superfluous in his personality and left slate behind. Erik, in comparison, looked like the angel Gabriel, so marked was the contrast. Did I really think Erik was hard when I first met him? Good God, I didn't know what hard was...

Brian tried to free himself, with difficulty, from his stepson's grasp. Erik had calmed down a bit and let go, but not without giving the man a helpful shove backward. He backed away from the desk and took Stephanie's arm.

He still looked angry enough to tear the man's heart out, but his voice was calm and controlled when he said, "I might have known you'd react like this. In fact, I did know. I tried to warn her what an incredible bastard you are, but she wanted to meet you anyway. That's what a great person she is. Not that you know, or care." He turned to Stephanie. She noticed his scar had turned white and there was a tic working at the corner of his mouth.
