Howell Raines had a lot of things in common with me. He was a big believer in rapid social change. As a reporter, he was the one that management would go to if they were having a problem with the worker bees. Colleagues throughout his career had said he had an air about him that left the impression he had been around forever even though he had not been.

His relatives were from the South. Like mine, they were farmers who tilled the fields that created great economic successes that many historians say contributed to America’s ability to become one of the world’s most powerful nations. People would describe Howell as an unforgiving man, particularly when it came to class and race. Howell would later say his ancestors were farmers who owned neither plantations nor slaves. That was, perhaps, one area where we diverged. Many of my black ancestors were slaves and many of my white ones owned them.
