Summer

In the dark bedroom, I stared out the windows, piecing over the script I’d sat with Breeze and written. It had been good laying out the facts, but I couldn’t imagine reading from a page. It felt wooden when I tried.

Thea had spoken to Henry, her journalist student friend, though it sounded like he wasn’t really a friend at all, and the man had agreed to help. He’d suggested talking to his professor, Tricia Thomas, who had written pieces on criminal cases for TV news and had an interest in women’s stories.

We needed someone with her skills. External validation to what we were doing.

Henry promised a conversation in the next couple of days, which would give me time to warm up to making my video.

Also to work out all the other things I needed to think about, like how to run and hide from a man who refused to let me. And from who I didn’t want to stray far.

The bedroom door clicked, and Jamieson strolled in, locking it behind him. He must’ve stripped his wetsuit downstairs as he wore only his jeans and a wry smile.

He crawled across the bed and ran his arms around me, rolling us so he was on his back and I was on his bare chest.

“Hi.” He kissed my forehead.

My heart thumped, the competing sensations of wanting more and needing to freeze up all too present.

“Are ye okay?” he asked.

I nodded against him.

“About earlier. That was as far as I could take it.”

He meant grabbing me on the beach. His hands all over me.

“Will you try again?” I asked. Getting rid of my virginity was vital.

“If ye want me to. But I plan to exploit our deal first.” He placed me back on the bed and sat up, taking my hand in his. With his gaze holding mine, he kissed my knuckles, each in turn.

“What are you doing?” I whispered.

“I want to get ye used to my touch. So I’m going to love on ye a little now, but this isn’t about sex. Completely unrelated and leading to nowhere apart from us getting close. Sound good?”

I shivered, liking the separation. It took away a layer of pressure around the bigger issues. “Very.”

He gave a cocky grin. With slow moves, he turned my hand and extended my fingers, then placed a kiss in the centre of my palm. Another to my wrist.

“I want to map every part of ye. Memorise each soft square of skin. For the longest time, I’ve imagined doing this.”

He drew his lips over my forearm to the inside of my elbow, kissing it almost like he had with my mouth. My biceps, my shoulders, up my throat to a sensitive spot under my ear.

I closed my eyes, my breathing coming in small hitches.

He didn’t stop.

His lips skimmed my hairline then down my nose, stopping briefly to press against my closed, fluttering eyelids. Too briefly, they ghosted over my lips then carried on.

He stopped, and I opened my eyes, missing his touch immediately.
