Chapter Seven

“The last few days have gone better than I expected.” Carla leaned back to look into Kelly’s eyes as he held her tight against him, thankful to come home to her safe and sound for one more day.

“Yeah, the weekend is almost over and Michelle should leave tomorrow morning, right?”

Carla had double and triple checked the schedule, looking forward to Monday. “Yes, she hasn’t mentioned anything about staying longer, thank goodness.”

Kelly pulled her in tighter and kissed the top of her head, pausing there for a second to drink in her fresh, floral scent that instantly soothed him. He could hardly wait for the morning.

“I’m so happy she’ll be served papers as she’s walking out of here. It’s been a long time coming.” He felt the corners of his mouth twitch in response to Carla grinning at him.

“I can’t wait for it, either. It’ll be nice having our house back, too.”

“Yes, yes, it will.” He pulled her in for a kiss that was quickly interrupted.

“Ew, you guys. Come on.” Lauren laughed and playfully shoved them apart as she walked to the check-in desk. “Why don’t you two go out on the boat today? I’ve got it.”

Kelly looked at Carla and raised his eyebrows. “What do you think?”

Carla laughed. “I think I like that Jordan and Lauren are getting along now. It’s made my weekend a lot easier.” She smiled at Kelly’s waiting expression. “Yes, I’d love to go out on the boat. Give me a second to get ready.”

She hurried out to the garage, and Kelly turned to his daughter. “So, you and Jordan worked things out?”

Lauren nodded.

“Can I ask what happened between the two of you?”

“It’s kind of silly now that we’re on the other side of it, but yeah.” She took a deep breath and closed her eyes as she relived the moment. She opened her eyes, and Kelly flinched when he saw the pain in them. “One morning, Jordan flew through the front doors at the school and loudly told me he saw mom at his wrestling tournament.” She closed her eyes again, unable to look him in the eye as she said the next sentence. “She was there with another girl, my age, and looked happy.”

Without hesitating, Kelly wrapped his arms around his daughter and hugged her fiercely as tears formed in both of their eyes.

“I’m so sorry.” It was insufficient, but it was all Kelly could think to say. He was sorry. Every fiber of his being wished he could go back and protect her from every cruel comment that came her way after Michelle left them.

Lauren wiped her tears away. “I’m sorry, too. I blamed Jordan. He got the brunt of my anger. All of it. He was just a kid himself. He was probably so excited to tell me he found her.” She groaned. “I’m shocked he was willing to forgive me.”

“That boy has always loved you and always will.”

“Yeah, I am lucky to have such a good friend, especially for how awful I was to ignore him for so long.
