Chapter Thirty-Nine

Miller

I arrived at Weinstein's office early. Greg believed I had a doctor's appointment and that I'd meet him there. Regret was coming on faster than rain in a summer afternoon downpour.

I was on the fence about retaining another lawyer. Weinstein was frustrating my efforts to direct things. I was paying him but he wasn't listening; he had his own ideas on how to interact with the police. If my foot could reach my butt, I'd have kicked myself for allowing him to convince me.

But the truth was, Detective Luca wanted to speak to Greg, and he said yes. I wanted to stop it and asked him as gently as I could but he resisted. My best shot was with Weinstein, but he thought talking to a family member who had nothing to hide would temper the grand conspiracy angle.

Arguing against the logic would raise more questions. I wasn't so sure anymore.

"How are you, Mr. Miller?"

"Good. A little nervous."

"There's nothing to be concerned about."

He should only know. "You know, I didn't think this was a good idea but you were very persuasive."

"It's the correct move."

"I'm afraid they'll increase scrutiny of my family. This gets out and our business will suffer. You know how people like to talk."

"We're on the way to putting this permanently behind us."

"I still don't understand what they want with Greg. He wasn't even there that Sunday."

"As discussed previously, he made a statement he saw the deceased late on the day she went missing. Detective Luca, being new to the case, is naturally interested in hearing the details of the sighting."

"He's going to start there, but he'll go off on a witch hunt. You have to keep him in check."

"He'll explore; it's what an investigator does. But that's why you have me. I'm going to protect Greg."

Greg? He wasn't the one needing protection. "I'd appreciate it if you didn't allow him to go on a wild-goose chase."

"You're overly concerned. Is there something you'd like to share?"

"I'm responsible for Mark and the business. I don't trust the police. There's tremendous pressure on them to solve this case and the Park Shore murder. Did you see what the sheriff said? He promised he'd get justice for the Swift family."

"It's a customary statement."

"Well, I just don't want Mark to get framed for it."

"If he had no involvement in her death or disappearance, you have nothing to fear."

Weinstein's secretary announced Greg's and Detective Luca's arrival. We met them in the foyer and retreated to the conference room. Luca eyed me suspiciously as I whispered to Greg to keep it short.

Detective Luca put a recording device on the table. "This interview is being recorded for everyone's protection."

When Weinstein said, "We don't object," I wanted to stomp on his foot.

Luca stated our names, the time and location, and began, asking Greg, "I want to talk to you about the events of June 1, 2013."

Greg said, "Just to be clear, that's the day that Katie Swift went missing, right?"

"Yes. It was a Sunday."

"Yeah, I remember flying back from a quick trip to Atlanta.
