Chapter Ten

Principal Owen sends me an email. I have to attend a training session for my job at the open house after school today. So much for my plan to hang out with Trevor and Luke. Instead—and my stomach lurches at the thought—I’ll be hanging out with Jeff.

Ms. Fornello and Principal Owen are training us. We have to report to Ms. Fornello’s office at three thirty.

When I arrive, the researchers from the University of Montreal are leaving. Haven’t they finished studying the flu clinic? Are they still tabulating results? I know better than to ask.

“Hi there, Daniel,” the guy with the goatee says when he sees me.

I say hi back. What I don’t say is, How come you know my name?

Jeff comes strolling down the hall. “I’m here,” he announces, adjusting his baseball cap.

Principal Owen is in Ms. Fornello’s office. He gets up to shake our hands. All this handshaking with a principal makes me nervous. But not Jeff. He pumps Principal Owen’s hand like a politician looking for votes.

“How ya doing?” Jeff asks. I guess if you get suspended enough times, you get chummy with the administration.

“You’ll be shaking a lot of hands at open house,” Ms. Fornello says. “But you should be aware that some people prefer not to shake. They worry about germs,” she adds. “Follow their lead. Extend your hand, but watch for their reaction.” Ms. Fornello extends her hand to demonstrate, and I automatically shake it.

“Lemme test your handshake,” Jeff says. He squeezes my hand so hard my eyes tear up. But I don’t say anything. I don’t want to give him the satisfaction of letting him know it hurt.

“Dust allergy,” I say as I wipe my eyes with the back of my hand.

Jeff grins.

Principal Owen says it’s important that we look presentable at open house. “No jeans. No T-shirts with rude slogans.” He turns to Jeff. “No baseball caps. I want you two to think of yourselves as ambassadors of Mountview High School.”

I catch Jeff’s eye when Principal Owen says ambassadors. Does Jeff think this is as weird as I do? But Jeff just grins again.

“Ms. Fornello and I have prepared a list of talking points for you—the things that make our school special,” Principal Owen continues. “The fact that our students’ scores on final exams are among the highest in the province; the multicultural environment; the many clubs students can join, such as the chess club”—Principal Owen turns to Jeff again—“and the weight-lifting club.”

“Right,” Jeff says, throwing back his shoulders.

Ms. Fornello wants to discuss security. “Since you two are going to be at the front entrance, you’ll be the eyes and ears of this school.”

Jeff and I follow Principal Owen and Ms. Fornello to the main entrance. “That’s where you two will be standing,” he says, pointing to the landing at the top of the stairs. He also points out the emergency exits, the fire alarm and the fire extinguishers.

Ms. Fornello shows us the emergency telephone. “If you pick up that phone, security will be here in minutes,” she explains.
