“I thought asteroid fields were dangerous. And would provide better cover for us.”

Victor heard Amadis’ mingled relief, disappointment, and concern as they flew into the seemingly empty belt, beating their pursuers to it by a couple of hours. “You must watch old movies. Asteroids are usually pretty far apart. You can go for hundreds of kilometers without encountering a larger chunk. There is danger though. They occasionally collide, and the fragments then go careening through space at a high rate of speed. You don’t want to be in their path should that happen.”

“How can we hide from the pirates?”

“They’re relying on scans and power signatures. This field, despite the distances between larger asteroids, is dense. It produces a magnetic field that can disrupt readings. We’re entering that field now. See? We just lost our ability to keep tabs on our friends.”

Indeed, the three blips on the star chart abruptly disappeared. Amadis grinned. “We’re invisible to them too?”

As delighted as Victor was to have reassured her, he refused to hide the truth. “Their ships may be newer, with better sensors. The field will mask us to an extent, but they’ll still catch our power signatures intermittently. The magnetized areas aren’t constant. See? There they are again. We’re in a thin area.”

She scowled. “Then what was the big deal about bringing us out here?”

He brought up another holographic map. “These. See the colored areas?”

She squinted at what appeared to be no more than black space splashed sporadically with prismatic blobs of color. “What are they?”

“This is a scan I created to detect magnetic fields of a certain strength. Those colored areas? At their centers should be the larger asteroids. One might provide us with the cover we need to elude Savela.”

She eyed the chart doubtfully. Victor didn’t blame her. He had plenty of misgivings about his plan too, but outside of surrendering to the pirates, it was their only option.

“Will we reach any of them in time?”

“Those two.” He pointed out the closer targets. “Maybe this third, if the field scrambles their sensors long enough for them to lose us.”

“We’re not detecting them again. It might work.” She offered him a smile. Brave lady.
