CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

'Bad Dreams' was released at the beginning of April, and a week later it came into the charts at number 38. XS didn't bother with a video or any publicity, but the next week the record went up to 32.. Dave kept ringing to say that the band ought to get together and publicize it, but it was obvious that he couldn't get Jason and Mike to agree so Buddy used that as an excuse not to do anything.

His dad was delighted that his prediction had come true and he increased the pressure on Buddy.

'You can't chuck it up now. You've got a hit, for Gawd's sake. Look, let me do a video. I know Alan and the guys at Arctic would 'elp out wiv the equipment. It could be a break for both of us.'

Buddy was on the point of saying yes, for his dad's sake, when he got a letter inviting him for an interview at Leeds University. It seemed like a sign, and he decided that, if he was offered a place, he would take it.

He got very nervous on the train up to Leeds, but the interview turned out to be very relaxed. The two lecturers, one from the Psychology Department and the other from the English Department, were quite young and they just asked him general questions about why he wanted to do the course. The Psychology lecturer even turned out to be a music fan, and he'd heard of The Bosses.

'I've never taught a rock star before,' he laughed. He wrote something on a form and then looked enquiringly at the other lecturer, who nodded. 'Well, we'll confirm it by letter, but I think I can tell you unofficially that we'll be offering you a place. I look forward to hearing all the inside stories about the Rock world!'

On the train back home Buddy bought an evening paper and saw the mid-week chart. 'Bad Dreams' had moved up to 27. He watched the countryside racing past and tried to hang on to his feeling of exhilaration. He had been offered a place at university. He was going to accept it. But he kept looking back at the chart: 27 . . . 'Bad Dreams' . . . The Bosses.
