At a crackling fire that fluttered in the early morning breeze sat six stolid figures. One man dressed in a leather loincloth and buckskin shirt began to speak with a strong, penetrating voice. The others listened with stoic expressions.

“My brothers,” he began. He gazed at the other proud individuals whose eyes were fixed on him. “The time has come. We as a people must take control of our own destiny. We must strive to be the dominant force, like our ancestors before, when they too walked in the physical world. We must face our enemies. We must eliminate the white dog.” The other men nodded in unison as hostility erupted inside each of them.

“Each of you must stand with me and fight so the Ute nation can live as we have for hundreds of years. These white devils take the land and litter it with these forts, trading posts – as they call them – and push our people further and further away from our ancestral lands. We cannot continue like this any longer, my brothers. We must slay these white devils and anyone else who sides with them.”

When the man with the penetrating voice paused, another spoke.

“Grey Wolf?”

“Yes, my brother.”

“My heart is with you and our Ute ancestors, but how will we eliminate the white dog when he is many, and we are few?”

The Ute leader named Grey Wolf sat expressionless, gazing into the flickering flames. He knew the warrior’s words had truth, but he was a proud man, and he would go to any length to protect his people. He was also a fair man, widely respected by many in the Ute Nation, but also known far and wide to bring turmoil to anyone who might cause him, or his people, unnecessary grief.

Grey Wolf turned to the warrior and finally said, “If we must, my brother, we will slay each white man, one by one.”

Again, with no expressions, the other warriors nodded in unison.
