Jonah glanced up and felt the Earth stop spinning

beneath his feet. His fingers gripped his weapon more tightly, he swallowed several times against the lump that had formed in his throat, and his heart hammered in his chest with the same ferocity as the day of the IED blast.

Kellan Reynolds sauntered slowly down the ramp

of the C-130. He was heavily laden with baggage. Jonah couldn't see his eyes, hidden as they were behind a set of aviators. He stepped from the ramp to the sand of Iraq and smiled.

Jonah struggled to steady his breath. Kellan was

here. Now. In fucking Iraq.

Jonah's body moved without his thinking about it.

Kellan approached, still smiling wide, hand extended.

Jonah couldn't help grinning in return. He worked to keep from looking like an excited teenager. He knew he was going to be embraced and suddenly he needed to touch Kellan as well, to prove this was all real.

"Hello, Jonah," Kellan said, grabbing Jonah's hand and pulling him in hard for a quick embrace. "God, it's good to see you again."

"Christ, LT," Jonah said, pulling back but not releasing Kellan's hand. "What the hell are you doing here?"
