Chapter Eleven

Petrina called Captain Callas to give an update with what she learned that afternoon.

“Learn anything useful from the British racers?” he asked.

“They prefer to be known as the English team. One of them is missing, specifically the Canadian team leader. What’s really interesting about that is that the destroyed bike that we found in Schmidt’s car was the one the Canadian was supposed to have used on Saturday.”

“And you spoke specifically with riders?” Callas asked.

“Four of them were available, and I spoke with Wainwright himself. He came to Rhodes to take over Schmidt’s leadership role. They made it sound like they were almost glad Dubois was missing. One of them even used the word ‘gone’.”

“I thought you said the team was out on a long training ride and wouldn’t be back to town until late?” Callas asked.

“That was the puzzling part. Wainwright was there with what he considered his four best riders. They were busy playing video games in the lobby, and not looking tired at all.”

“I’ll try to get there later to talk with the others.”

“I can go back and try to talk with more of them, if you like?” she asked.

“You’ve done enough.”

“What’s your other investigation, Sir? Is that something I can help with?”

“I have three active cases. That’s why I’m letting you go ahead with some of the preliminary investigation in the case you’re already working on. Just don’t get carried away with it.”

Petrina’s curiosity was piqued. “What are they?”

“Shoplifting at a tourist souvenir store in Socratous Square. Another tourist refused to pay for a fishing excursion because they didn’t catch any fish and ran off. And an Italian schoolteacher and a German tourist got into a fight at a bar. They broke up the place pretty good.”

“What was the fight over?” she asked.

“A woman. Want to know the strange part?”

“The Italian and the German were also women?”

“Yes, and the girl they were fighting over was straight as an arrow, on vacation here with her parents all the way from Indonesia, Java, one of those places.”

“Welcome to modern tourism, Captain Callas,” Petrina said when she was off the call. She called Caitlyn and Gaia to see if they were still at dinner.

“We just sat down at Knights Palace Restaurant right around the corner from Knights Street.”

“I know it. Order me a plate of fries and a Greek salad. I’ll be there in ten minutes.” She had to park her scooter half a block away, and got to their table just as the meals were being brought out. “What a day.”

“You look tired,” Gaia said.

“I’m not sure when one day blends with the next.”

“Welcome to the life of a police investigator,” Caitlyn said. “Have you got anywhere with the German?”

Petrina glanced at Gaia before answering.

“Caitlyn told me a little about it,” Gaia said. “Anyway, it’s already on the national news about his death. They made it sound like a murder.”

“That didn’t take long. My captain is supposedly taking the lead on the German. The problem for him is that it’s become a lot more complicated than any of us originally expected.
