My nerves had completely taken over my body. At Arrow’s bar, with all the women in the pack, we were preparing to partake in a ceremony that would change everything about my life going forward. I gazed at myself in the mirror, not believing the reality that was in front of me. I was dressed in ceremonial attire that complemented the radiant brown of my skin. Looking at it, I remembered a time when I was younger. I would tell the kids in school of my Indian descent. They would call me a liar because my skin was too black and my hair was too nappy.

The ignorance of so many people who lacked the understanding that Indians come in so many shades before you add the drop of melanin.

Arrow and Chief Askil wanted to complete the ceremony as soon as possible with the impending danger that loomed around the corner. The women had gone over the ceremony with me, so I knew everyone’s part.

“You are so beautiful,” Mama Eyota complimented while Mari slept in her arms. She, Mama Claire, and our grams were staying back to cook as well as watch the babies. They had already started cooking. It smelled heavenly.

Suddenly, thoughts of my father rushed me. I wondered if he was proud that I’d made it back to his homeland, which had helped him become the man he was. I was going to be a part of his pack officially. I smiled with confidence, knowing that he was proud. He knew telling me to come here that I would be loved.

Rebel came from the side, wrapping her arms around me. All the women who were participating in the ceremony also wore ceremonial attire; however, it was a different style and colors than mine. “I’m so happy for you. This will be the beginning of a new life.” She kissed my cheek. “Now Arrow’s future mate will officially be a member of the pack.”

“Girl, please stop!” Since he refused to go back to his apartment until whoever was after me was neutralized, we had gotten closer. We worked together and, for all intents and purposes, lived together as well. We’d gotten into a routine of watching movies together every night after Mari was put down. There were a few times that we’d fallen asleep on the couch, and woke up wrapped in each other. Our subconscious seemed to be magnetized to each other.

“I don’t know why you’re telling her to stop when she speaks the truth,” Mama Claire chimed in. “Baby, if you can’t see what the gods have placed in front of you, then you are silly.” She walked over to me from where she stood behind the bar. “I’ve known Arrow since he was a young pup. A lot comes with him. There are times that he can be all about self with anything that is outside of the pack. Then, one cold night, this woman wandered onto our land and changed every move that this man made.

“This is a man who has always made it clear that he did not like children.
