KIRKLEE

The Glasgow Central Railway, opened in 1896 and operated by the Caledonian Railway, saw the construction of some fine stations designed by the great Scottish architect J. J. Burnet. The principal buildings of one, Kelvinside, remain albeit rebuilt after extensive fire damage. But Kirklee, which survived into the 1960s after closure in 1939, has been demolished. Burnet employed some handsome Arts & Crafts detailing such as the chunky piers to the covered entrance to the platforms and the balustrade, the broad eaves of the central portion of the building and the large grouped windows. The building is seen in a derelict state. John R. Hume/RCAHMS
