Chapter 17
I stood between Aer and Theodren in the huge room, while their mother alternately glared at me and tried to touch Leena, who completely ignored her or snapped at her fingers. The inlaid floors were genuine wood and probably something fancy, like cherry or maple. Paneling of the same wood went halfway up the walls and the other half was damask wallpaper and ornate silver framed mirrors and portraits. Studying the furnishing at least kept me from meeting her eyes. I was tired of the daggers she was giving me.
Iâd never had a problem with public speaking, but since I was part of the ânewsâ I found myself a little nervous. Leena rubbed her triangular head against my cheek. âWhy wonât you talk to any of them?â I knew she could communicate in draconic. Sheâd scolded Aer a couple times on the ride here for trying to tell her what to do, but since weâd arrived at the mansion, sheâd been silent.
She sniffed and dug her claws into my shoulder. âI just donât feel like it. They had mean thoughts about you. I didnât like it, Mommy.â
I laughed softly. Leena was definitely a leader and her information confirmed Theodrenâs prediction of her being a silver. Or did the metallic versus chromatic categorization not apply the same way to the Great Dragons? Iâd have to ask someone . . . later. Aerâs mother looked at me suspiciously, and I cleared my throat, then pretended to look around the room some more. âSo, which of us is doing the talking at this thing?â
Aer considered it for a moment and then nodded at me. âI think you should.â
âI think all three of us. Theodren can talk about his capture, you about your decision to bring me in, and I can go over what Mr. Creepy thinks and is doing.â I whispered, so only the three of us could hear. We didnât have to wait long before Aerâs father returned, and behind him was a line of Rikashi streaming into the ballroom in a seemingly never-ending line. Pretty soon, the room filled with them and the dull roar of many conversations. Aerâs father came over to stand beside us, and he let out a loud whistle. Conversations ceased, and all eyes were on us.
âAs you know, I have been searching for my sons for some time. They returned to us today and say they have some information.â He sounded like a relieved parent, but I could tell it was all an act. From the looks on the otherâs faces, heâd said something to them before theyâd come in. He turned to us. âGo ahead.â
I looked at Aer and Theodren. Aer nudged me forward and Theodren nodded. Cowards! They were going to let me do the talking. Fine. I stood there, looking out at the sea of strange faces. Some of the Rikashi were in hybrid form and swallowed past the lump rising in my throat and gave myself a mental pep talk. I could do this.
