Lany smoothed his fingers down the coarse fabric of the shirt Omar had given him. He had been told that the brown-colored US Fish and Wildlife Service uniform Omar gave him to wear would get him into the veterinarian clinic where he and Omar could rescue Bray.

He didn’t care if he had to wear a gunny sack. If it got him to Bray, he’d wear it. He just wanted to get there. The waiting was driving him out of his mind. He could hear the wheels turning on the car he rode in and knew they were headed toward the vet clinic. They couldn’t get there fast enough.

“How much farther?” he asked. He would have thought they would have been there by now. It wasn’t like this was a large city. It had one freaking traffic light. How far from the diner could this place be?

“Just a couple of more blocks.”

Lany exhaled a shaky breath. “And you’re sure no one is following us?”

“Naw,” Omar replied, “I haven’t seen anyone.”

“That doesn’t mean they’re not there,” Lany mumbled. He seriously doubted Omar understood the danger they were in or how tenacious the Senate Soldiers would be in their pursuit. There wasn’t much out there that would make the Sentries stop hunting him.

“I would know.”

There was so much confidence in Omar’s voice that for a moment Lany’s limited trust in the man was shaken. How would he know? How could he be so sure that no one was following them? Just because Omar could see didn’t mean he saw everything.

Lany’s misgivings about trusting someone he didn’t know were growing bigger with each passing moment. Despite the uniform he had been given to wear, he only had Omar’s word that they were heading toward the veterinarian clinic where Bray was supposed to be located. Omar’s word didn’t make it true.

For all Lany knew, the plan that had been explained to him could just be a smoke screen to keep him calm while he was driven back to the Senate estate. How would he know any differently until it was too late?

“How much father?” he asked again.

“You already asked that.”

“I’m asking again.” And if he didn’t get an answer, he was ready to bail.

“We’re here,” Omar said after a moment.

Lany’s heart began to beat a little faster as he felt the car turn then slow to a stop. He gripped the handle on the door, waiting for the engine to turn off before opening the door and climbing out.

“Do you remember the plan, Lany?”

“I remember.” He wasn’t an idiot.

“Just try and stay beside me or slightly behind me,” Omar said. “If they suspect for even a minute that you can’t see shit, this rescue mission is toast.”

Lany knew that. He also knew that he had to use every enhanced sense he had to make his way without his cane. Scent, sound, and touch were of the utmost importance right now. Sight was obviously totally out of the picture, and taste would only work if he bit someone.
