The fall was over in a second. Lara opened her eyes to the feel of itchy straw. She sat up and looked around.

I could have sworn that this cart wasn’t here when I fell, she thought. She raised her eyes up to the sky. Thank you, God.

Lara quickly got out of the straw cart and realized that it was the busy time of day for the market. She saw that the only way out of the castle walls from where she stood was through the grand entrance. She quickly walked away from the straw cart and into the market. She stayed within the shadows of the wall so that she wouldn’t be noticeable. She made her way through the town until someone yelled at her. She turned around to face an old woman coming toward her. Lara didn’t know if she should run or kindly refuse what the lady was trying to offer her.

“Hiya gypsy,” the woman croaked. “Are you well?”

“Uhhhh…yes, ma’am. I am well.”

“Oh, you sure? I saw your back and all the stains and cuts on it.”

Lara blanked. She couldn’t think of anything to say. “Um, I got attacked by a wild cat. I am fine, though. I’ll go straight to my camp and clean. Thank you.”

The old woman looked at her disbelievingly. Lara smiled and quickly turned and walked away before the woman could ask any more questions. She briskly moved past all the carts and booths selling trinkets and goodies until finally, after what seemed like eternity, she exited the gates of the castle walls and trudged another five miles to where the gypsy camp was hidden within the trees. Lara could only hope that her mother and Iris had made it back without any trouble.
