Chapter 2(39) (Chakra tirtha)
Brahma said, âThe place known as Chakra tirtha destroys the sin of killing a brahmana and other sins. This is the place where Hari obtained his divine chakra from Chakreshvara. 649 For the sake of obtaining the chakra from Lord Shankara, Vishnu himself remained there and worshipped him. That tirtha is known as Chakra tirtha. Even if a person hears about it, he is freed from all sins. Dakshaâs sacrifice was being conducted. At an assembly of the gods, Daksha abused the divinity, Shiva Sharva Maheshvara. Dakshaâs mind was so polluted that he did not invite the lord of the gods. When Ahalya spoke about it, from her words, Dakshayani got to know the reason about the invitation not being used. Sureshvari was enraged. 650 On hearing the abusive words her father had spoken about her husband, she said, âI will not forgive my father, the sinner. I will destroy him. There is no limit to the sins of women who hear their husbands being censured. Whatever be the nature of the husband, he is the ultimate refuge for a woman. What need be said about Mahadeva, who is a lord for everyone and the preceptor of the universe? Since I have heard him being censured, I will not bear this body any longer. Therefore, I will give up this body.â This is what the great Sati said. Overwhelmed by great rage, Sureshvari blazed up. With her mind fixed only on Shiva, she used the power of yoga to give up her body. From Narada, Maheshvara heard everything that had transpired. He angrily looked towards Jaya and Vijaya and asked them. 651 Both of them told the divinity what they had heard from Dakshayani about Dakshaâs sacrifice being destroyed. Hearing this, Maheshvara left for the sacrifice. He was surrounded by terrible ganas and the lords of the bhutas went with him. They surrounded the sacrifice, which had been organized by the gods, with Brahma at the forefront. With pure sentiments, it had been guarded by Daksha, who was performing the sacrifice. It was surrounded by Vasishtha and other fierce sages. It was protected in every possible direction by Indra, the Adityas, the Vasus and others. It was embellished by the sounds of chants from Rig Veda, Yajur Veda and Sama Veda and there were sounds of svaha. It was ornamented from every direction by Shraddha, Pushti, Tushti, Shanti, Lajja, Sarasvati, Bhumi, Dyou, Sharvari, Kshanti, Usha, Asha, Jaya, Mati and others. 652 The great-souled Tvashta and Vishvakarma had constructed it. 653 There were the cows Surabhi, Nandini, Kamadhuk and Kamadohini. There were many others that showered down every kind of desire. It was prosperous, with every kind of wish being met. There were kalpavrikshas like Parijata. There were creepers that yielded everything one desired. Everything that was wished for was present in that sacrifice. It was protected by Maghavan, Pusha and Hari himself. There were cheerful sounds of âGiveâ, âEatâ, âDoâ and âStayâ. In this way, Dakshaâs sacrifice was revered through many words.
